“How are youth represented in Skins?”

The Skins trailer is set in a house party; it is fairly small, probably an urban, terrace house, the rooms are not very big and everybody seems to be “crammed” in. There are no adults present, only rowdy teenagers, with no control. It is clear that they are under the influence of alcohol; there are bottles scattered around the house, many of the characters seem to be drunk or partially drunk. They are not only drinking alcohol socially though, they are also consuming it purely to become intoxicated – binge drinking, so they are drinking any type of alcohol they can have, without considering the consequences. Furthermore, as well as some of them probably being under the legal drinking age, there are drugs being taken too; reflecting a carefree society where little respect for the law is taken.
The teenagers clearly have few responsibilities; therefore they can relax and have no worries, except for possibly part time work and school work, as a result, they are easy going. These youths are clearly experimenting; consuming alcohol and drugs, sexually as well; people are having sex in what looks like the parents’ bed, on the wall in the bathroom, they are doing it anywhere and everywhere.
At the party, everyone seems to know everybody, they are all friends and couples, and also relaxed around one another, people are running around half naked, they are having water fights, riding around on bikes through the house; this helps to symbolize their closeness and friendship. However, there is also clear evidence of their disrespect for the house and its property, people are writing on the walls, having water fights and damaging objects such as vases. The Mise en scene used, such as sofa cushions being thrown around, illustrates helps to make the scene more realistic and lifelike, showing verisimilitude, so that the viewer can relate to it.
There is only digetic sound in the whole trailer, in fact the only sound from the whole scene is the loud music played in the party, there is no dialogue or sound effects, this has the effect making it appear more dream-like and unreal. In addition, the music is in harmony with the cinematography; when there are crescendos, the camera cuts less, taking longer shots, slowing down the scene. When the tempo picks up, there are more, faster crosscuts, in synchronisation with the song. The song is upbeat, fast and modern; this is used to represent the teenagers’ lives.
After the viewer watches the cast using drugs, there is a scene of strobe lighting; everything slows down, including the music, and as the lights flash on the characters, they appear delusive, reinforcing the idea of care-free lives, it portrays them as high and disillusioned.
Overall, in this Skins trailer, youth are presented as carefree, non law abiding teenagers, whom are exploring their senses with drugs, sex, alcohol and loud music. Moreover, they have little respect for their elders and their surroundings, and their main objective is to have fun, without any worries. They do not take their consequences into action, and as the montages showed, many of them cannot handle their overtaking of substances and alcohol, and are vomiting around the house.

Anchorman

Lead Role – Will Ferrell

Synopsis – Will Ferrel – Ron Burgundy is the lead anchorman, news presenter for the leading news channel in the ‘70’s. He and his very stupid colleagues are very stupid, but very popular in America. Everything is all good until an aspiring news presenter, who is extremely hot, enters the male dominated scene. As the film progresses, they enter and exit a crazy relationship and she makes her way up the news presenting ladder, from cat cat walks to panda births..... – Promoting feminism too - making her the biggest anchorwoman of all presenters, including men, while Ron has a breakdown and loses everything. Including his very cool dog, Baxter. In the end, his dog manages to return to him, as well as his sanity and he recovers from his mid life and returns to news presenting ,with an awe-inspiring climax he manages to get back with his blonde counterpart and they manage to film the panda birth, it is a very HILARIOUS film.

Will Ferrell is presented as an over-confident, idiotic, childish, successful presenter. He plays the part convincingly well too.

The plot is very simple, self explanatory and easy to follow. He does the majority of the speaking, helping to progress the story line.

How are editors valuable to film directors? How can editing make or break a drama?

Editing is taking out the bad and slow and bad bits, and looking deeper into the good parts. However, it can be very difficult to decide what makes a scene effective, and what could ruin it - it could be only one frame. Professional editors have experience and knowledge of how to merge scenes, at exactly what point. Film editing is an art that can be used in many different ways; it can bring out the emotional truth in an actor's performance. It can provide a point of view. It can guide the telling and pace of a story. It can create the idea of danger when there is none or suprise when we least expect it.
Film Directors' roles are to influence the way a film is made, to direct actors in their roles and affect how the movie is filmed. Afterwards, there will be an excess of recorded films, of which the director will only want a small part of. Therefore, as a result of this unrendered film, Editors are responsible for pulling all elements of the story; dialogue, music, sound effects, visual effects, pace and rhythm of a film.
As a result of their great responsibilities, film editors can either make or break films. Nowadays, they have even more important responsibilities; editing roles have merged, such as picture editing and film editing have both now come under the film editors responsibility. Furthermore, their audience sizes have increased - leading to either greater success or failure. Moreover, film editing has become more intricate, because of the new technology, there are higher standards and more possibilities - which are harder to learn and gain experience from, but can give an even greater result than in the past.

How is identity represented in Dr Who through Mise en scene?

Dr Who immediately comes across as a man who does not belong in that scene; he is wearing makeup, has gelled his hair, is well shaved and has clean cut sideburns and beard. This all contributes to his general look of a well dressed, clean and modern man, as anyone thinks of Dr Who does. Furthermore, he is well dressed; he is wearing a casual suit with shoes, plain trousers, a simple tie and shirt, although he has no dust or dirt on him from the dingy, worn down theatre he is in, but this is not uncommon as that is his attire and image. Also, once he is in the prison, he pulls out his stethoscope – very verisimilitude as although he is a time traveller, he is still a Doctor, and still carries basic equipment with him.
On the other hand, the commanding general in the theatre is quite the opposite of Dr Who, he is dressed in his army clothes; a green vest, a green jacket, dark combat trousers, polished black boots and a dog tag around his neck – he clearly represents a typical army commander. Moreover, he has a slight crew cut, a rough beard and greying hair, possibly as a result of the stress of everyday life. His personality also adds to appearance; a concise man, who irrationally thinks, believing combat to be the best medium of solving disputes. The other soldiers are all similar to the general; the same attire and eager to fight.
In contrast, Catherine Tate is portrayed as a clean, quick thinking, and a well dressed woman. She is wearing large, golden earrings - impractical for her “job” but it adds to her look. Also she has clean, brushed hair, she is wearing makeup – eyeliner, lipstick etc, and is wearing a fairly trendy cardigan. This tells the reader about her role, she clearly, like the doctor, isn’t from the current time or place. Dr Who’s daughter is good looking, she is wearing makeup, although this partly contradicts her part as she recently has popped out of a machine - it is unlikely that in that environment she would have been able to make herself look fabulous after just being “born”, but it’s Doctor Who so anything goes. However, she is wearing army clothes which is verisimilitude as she was “born” in the army base and therefore would have been provided with their clothes.
The Hath, the Alien soldiers are shown to have orangey, loose skin, are about the size of humans, have no hair and have an alien device for their breathing apparatus which has a green liquid in with bubbles constantly rising up and a glass container. This image is a very stereotypical “costume” for aliens, it is clear that they are not humans because of their physical description as well as their unheard of dialect, their futuristic clothing and weapons and their funky, super technology, for example touch screen holograms. In addition, their surrounding colours are very bright and luminescent: common for the “normal” aliens and the way they are depicted in comic books.
Overall, Identity is represented in Dr Who through Mise en scene with the different characters attire, props, makeup and personality. However, it is also illustrated through the positioning of actors; often Dr Who was in a “place of power” he could see things other characters couldn’t, which reflects his role – the main character. This was also shown through the commander, he would appear the highest ranking in the scene, but Dr Who was on a higher platform – metaphorically showing greater presence.

Peter's bloog

Hello!

How are you?

I had a pretty good day today, but the weather was horrible, i got lots and lots of sand in my eyes because of the gusty, gusty wind. Furthermore, there was a chill in the air... not nice.

Then, as if the weather wasn't bad enough, i was set two essays and other homeworks, which is not cool at all.

Then to make matters even worse, i didnt have games, even though i wasnt supposed to, but that still bothered me (sad face).

Then, just to top it, i had to wait 20 minutes for my french teacher, and when we were just going to leave to go to study, she turned up and sent us off anyway - pointlessly pointless waiting.

In fact, looking at that post, i dont think i did have a great day... shame

Peter's film review

Favourite Film and TV series

Well I’m kind of doing this as I go along…. I don’t really have a favourite film, but I like loads. So I’ll tell you about one. I love the Lion King! – It is actually such a good film, and I’ve seen it TWICE at the theatre! I don’t really think I need to explain the story line, but I guess I have to. Well, it’s about this lion cub who’s going to be the next king of an African kingdom. His uncle, Scar, is a bad lion and he wants to be king too. King Mufasa is protective of his son, so he’s always saying “don’t go there, its dangerous”. Anyway, one day, Simba goes to a bad place with his underage girlfriend and they have to escape from Hyenas. Anyway, one day, there’s a wildabeast stampede and Simba’s with his dad and his dad gets killed, because Scar, his brother trapped him! Anyway Mr van Straten, if you haven’t seen it, I won’t spoil it for you, it’s the best animated film, EVER.

Well, at the moment, I don’t watch much TV…. So I’ll talk a bit about what I watch… Prison Break.. Basically, it’s about this guy who’s set up and accused of murdering a politician. Anyway, he’s on death row, but his brother, who is pretty much in love with him, knows he’s innocent and is determined to help. So, he plans it all out, by tattooing it on his body, and then commits a crime. So now this foolish man is in prison, but he’s a genius so he’s got it all figured out. Anyway, he manages to get contacts and delay his brothers delay a lot, and he starts to put his plan into action about escaping. SORRY to end it there, but I don’t know if you want to watch it, but its pretty good, so you should.
